Welcome to
Woodborough in Wiltshire
Summer 2025 - Wessex Water works - C38 Broad Street/Smithy Lane crossroads
Wessex Water will be relining the sewers beneath the road during the summer holidays. The road closure notice, which can be viewed here, applies from 21st July to 29th August.
Further communications have now been received from Wessex Water and the rolling program of road closures in the village can be viewed here.
In addition, residents of Smithy Lane and Church Farm Lane have received additional information as these lanes are dead ends and diversions cannot be arranged. Instructions for those residents can be found here - Smithy Lane and here - Church Farm Lane.
Specific information about closures in Church Road can be found here (info) and here (map).
Specific information about the closure of footpath WOOD11 past the Parish Room can be found here
Q&A - Wessex Water has responded to questions raised by residents at the recent parish council meeting as follows:
We were not aware of this subsidence [in Church Road]. We have not marked the road up for works so not something we are dealing with. If you have any concerns in regards to the road we would suggest to get in touch with the local council/highways department to enquire about this. [Parish Council has contacted Highways]
I am sorry to hear that some letters appear to have not been received. I have run a check back through our records and all the addresses you mentioned were definitely included on the distribution mailing list of properties to receive the letter so I am not sure why this is the case.
Whilst our contractors will do their best to maintain access and assist customers where possible, it is suggested that residents assume that access will not be provided to their properties during the dates stated on the letter in order to avoid any disruption to customers. Please note, the road will be re-opened when its safe and practical to do so.
I will be sending letters to those most affected, on Smithy Lane and Church Farm Lane, to advise them of the closures. [See linked letters above] Our contractors will also knock doors on the morning to also advise customers to move any vehicles etc. that they may require access to during the closure.
The Social Club have agreed to the use of their car park by affected residents during the work. Given the relatively short-term nature of impact on specific properties’ access, we would hope this would be sufficient; however, when we will be working on the end of Smithy Lane closest to the cross roads, access to the Social Club may not be possible and so alternative arrangements would need to be made.
There will be no impact to the water supply during these works. These works are to the sewer network and should cause no disruption to customers.
The school has been made aware of the relining work taking place in the village.
There is no site compound per se for this scheme. The nature of relining work means most of the equipment is confined to individual small areas, while accepting that on occasion, as in Woodborough, this can impact roads and access.
Parish Council Meetings
The next meeting of the parish council will be held on Monday 29th September at 7.00pm
in the Woodborough Parish Room.
In view of some posts on WhatsApp, and a few emails/letters to the parish council, please peruse this Rationale, for the planned extension to the pavement along the C261 (between Leabinloch and the stream), in conjunction with the older Summary of Traffic Management, November 2023, to be found on the documents page.
The final design for the pavement extension, produced by Wiltshire Highways, can be viewed here.
Woodborough, Wiltshire
The attractive rural civil parish of Woodborough is set almost in the middle of the Vale of Pewsey in Wiltshire, and lies within the North Wessex Downs Landscape Trust, formerly named an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is almost equidistant from the market towns of Devizes and Marlborough and 3 miles west of the village of Pewsey. There is a spectacular White Horse clearly visible on the escarpment just a few miles to the north, by Alton Barnes. As a result of a massive effort by the Woodborough community area it was completely re-chalked in 2019, with considerable help from an RAF Chinook.
Read more about the history of the White Horse here and read more about the re-chalking exercise here.
Walkers Are Welcome
Woodborough is one of the parishes within the Pewsey Community Area Partnership so will be included in the latest Walkers Are Welcome initiative. More information as to how this will benefit the Pewsey Vale can be found here. Accreditation has now been achieved - please see the press release for further information about this and view the certificate here.

Bus services
Wiltshire Council has launched five new Wiltshire Connect bus services, making changes to the current bus network in the Pewsey Vale area.
The innovative new services include both on-demand and semi-flexible/timetabled buses, which can pick up and drop off passengers where they want to go, when they want to get there. The service uses brand new, accessible minibuses and ride bookings can be made with our new app or by calling our friendly booking team on 01225 712900.
Residents can find lots of information available about the new services and download the Wiltshire Connect app from our website at: www.wiltshireconnect.co.uk or by calling our friendly booking team on 01225 712900.
Pewsey has a mainline railway station, with direct trains to and from London. Pewsey and Devizes have onward bus services to Marlborough, Swindon, Salisbury, Trowbridge, Melksham and Bath.
